Don Pasquale is an ironic opera, but – like every opera by Donizetti – its comic quality, its irony, is always marked with great melancholy, which should be underlined at least thrice. This is what distinguishes Donizetti from Rossini. Not because Rossini isn’t melancholic or even dramatic or tragic, but because in his opera comica Rossini thinks about amusing also through hammering instrumental virtuosity, which Donizetti is a complete stranger to. In fact, he finds irony and smile on a great libretto – because this is a perfect libretto – through the ability of bending the music to the word and bending to the deep right meaning of each word. Thus, with little manner of means and little hints, Donizetti can create – as it is for Don Pasquale – an opera which is dramaturgically perfect.
