Riccardo Muti / Vienna Philharmonic
Anton Bruckner
Symphony No. 8 in C Minor, WAB 108 (ed. Haas)
The 2025 Special Annual Edition is dedicated to the remarkable artistry of our honorary member Riccardo Muti. With this live recording, we are proud to present his interpretation of Anton Bruckner ’s Symphony No. 8 in C minor, WAB 108 (ed. Haas), which he conducted in concert at the 2024 Salzburg Festival.
Riccardo Muti’s very first interpretation of this work fell during the Bruckner bicentennial celebrated in 2024 – a momentous occasion for which he entrusted the performance to the members of our orchestra. This was a testament to his unique relationship with the Vienna Philharmonic, as well as a reflection of his humility towards the great symphonic works, particularly those of the Austrian musical tradition.
Bruckner’s Eighth Symphony is a work that poses great demands on both conductor and musicians, and holds particular historical significance for us, as our orchestra gave its highly successful world premiere in 1892 in the composer’s second version.
For more than five decades, the Vienna Philharmonic and Maestro Riccardo Muti have cultivated a shared musical language that constantly breathes new life into time-honoured tradition. Each work resonates on a new level through readings that are both faithful to the composer’s intentions and unmistakably personal, making for a listening experience of uncommon power and immediacy.
